“Do I need Hired and Non-Owned auto liability coverage?”
This is a frequent question we are asked by business owners in the Non-Emergency Medical Transportation industry.
First, let’s discuss what the coverage is and how it works: Hired auto liability covers bodily injury and property damaged caused by vehicles you might rent or borrow. Non-Owned auto coverage covers bodily injury and property damaged caused by vehicles owned by others used within the scope of your business operations. A few examples would be your employee’s vehicles or your personal autos (that the business does not own) but are operated on company time. If an accident occurs and your business is sued, this coverage springs into action.
You might say to yourself, “I don’t ever rent vehicles and my employees only are allowed to drive company owned vans.” While this may be true, do you ever send employees out to pick up coffee or lunch for the office? Or how about quick trips to the post office or bank?
Most owners of NEMT companies find themselves in some type of situation where these coverages are needed.
